Parental Advisory

Postby Ilsa » 7th Feb 08, 15:32

Yes I know there are explicit lyrics, yes I'm a parent... and I'd still ike to listen to it please....

During the summer I tend to do a lot of driving, with my daughter and so the CD player in the car gets hammered. I've become quite good at substituting swear words for "regular" words.

F*ck = Funk
T*at = Rat
Shit = Hit / Fit / It
Bullsh*t = Mum HIt (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah is my 5 year olds' favourite song of the moment)

It hasn't come up yet, but any suggestions for "c*nt"? Would also welcome any alternatives to the above.

PS I'm actually a really good parent. Honest. Could be worse, I could have her listening to some generic girl band....

Class! When I was with my last gf she had a 5 yo boy and he used to love Yeah Yeah Yeah.

We would substitute "bullshit" for "WAH WAAH" - and he would sing along quite gleefully. He still calls it the wah waah song.

Oooh, love it...! Much better than Mum Hit. In my defence, it was the school run in the morning when I came up with that one - veeeerry early.

my three year old and six year old both love the wildhearts and similar bands but neither seems to have picked up any of the swearwords yet. we do use the skip button in the car on occasion too. what is really frustrating is when the majority of the song is okay until a sudden burst of swearing (such as the end of josser bank) ruins a good old family sing song.
why do i have to ignore you to get your attention?

the kid's 5 right? i'm assuming that means that they're in first year of primary school by now? i guaruntee they've heard at least half of the general-purpose swearwords, especially if they go on a school bus!

hell, i went to a CATHOLIC primary school, and i knew every swearword going by the age of about 7. you might as well let them hear it now and just explain lightly that they're not nice words to say to others. when a teacher heard me swearing i got a massive bollocking off them and my parents, which immediately made me and all the other kids think "fuck, this is cool, i'll say it more often!"

Grimbo, I went through a Catholic education and was swearing (and doing a few other things  ) far too young as well. All that repression just isn't healthy!! I have had the "that's not a nice word" conversation with her - which is why she doesn't need to hear me singing it!

Mark E, She does love a sing along, and as I've got VDC in the car at the moment it was funny driving home tonight, I turned the CD down to answer a call (handsfree - of course!) and when the call had finished she shouted, "Mum, will you turn it back up please!"

Beans, thanks for your link, I'll view it when my chuffing speakers are working - grrrrr!!

I think encouraging an interest in all music is healthy for a child. She's aware of Pop Princesses, and their music might not contain explicit lyrics, but Britney bleedin Spears isn't much of a role model now is she??

My daughters' had a half size guitar since she was 2, and her strumming is excellent.... my husband now thinks it's a good idea to get her a drum kit...mmmmmmmm

Please tell me I'm not the only one who wants to know what "a few other things" are?
