Albums, singles, songs and general Ginger banter

Postby MikeM » 5th Apr 06, 15:52

my first introduction was a line in "Sorority Girl" by Crunchy in which Monty Colvin, formerly of the Galactic Cowboys sings "when everyone liked Hootie, you were driving in your car, jamming to the Wildhearts, jamming to the wildhearts...." this was around 2000 and i live in the US and never had any exposure to the Wildhearts before this so I was fascinated about who this band could be. I couldn't find them in any of the local music stores, but i felt like a kid in a candy store when i discovered the amount of Wildhearts cd's and singles that were available on the internet. My first was "Earth vs." and then anything I can get my hands on since.

I remember that. Did it have a yellow cover? Was it a live version?
I think it might have been Melody Maker.

Sounds like the same one - it was definitely yellow - and live - I've still got it somewhere but its probably at the bottom of a box of about 400 cassettes.....

Heard 'Turning American' at the Mayfair in Newcastle.

Then my bro lent me 'Earth Vs'

Was the best f***ing album I'd ever heard. Been a fan ever since. Got pretty much everyting the daft sand dancer has ever recorded since then.

Without a doubt, he's the best living british songwriter.

Nuff said.

Anyone know of any links to videos of this appearance? I've seen pictures of their groovily disturbing psycho-glam-pimp get-up for the performance, but I've never seen the show itself.

Sorry for being a lazy bastard and asking for links to stuff all the time, but what the hell...just think of me as a charity case. :)

I have a dvd that a friend at work burned for me, it has this appearance on it, but the quality is severely shite!!!

She got it off the net, so it's out there somewhere, wouldn't have the foggiest where to start looking though

First time I'd really heard of Ginger was when he was still in The Quireboys and did a hilarious guest single review slot in Kerrang along with Wurzel from Motorhead and that Chainsaw guy from Slave Raider...it ended up with Ginger offering whichever poor K! scribe had to babysit that lot a blowjob in exchange for the Nuclear Assault 12" they'd reviewed! I had seen the 'Mayfair' video on The Chart Show before that (remember when that show was good? That'll out the 30somethings on here!), so I guess that'd be the first time I heard anything with Ginger on it, but I didn't know anything about him then.

First thing I heard from The Wildhearts was the 'Nothing Ever Changes...' vid on Raw Power and was instatnly hooked. Didn't get hold of Mondo Akimbo at the time, so was chuffed when the 'remixed' version was included with 'Don't Be Happy...' (especially as it meant you got an album's worth of material for a paltry £2.99 - very important to the poor student I was then!)

Aye, I remember the Chart Show being good, at least they gave you an idea of what the specialist chart was going to be that week, and it was always on at the same time, and they got a decent amount of playtime.

I think I only watched cd uk a couple of times, luckily, one of those times was when Danny and Chris McCormack guested with Misteeq, classic tv!!!!!!!

You are the Master of ALL THINGS

It was lovely to finally see that...especially as it came from an era whereby people, like, y'know thougt they liked guitar-based music. But only if it approached teen-angst in a reliably one-dimensional, rusty-larynxed, hey-why-should-music-release-you-from existential-misery-rather-than-help-you-dwell-upon-it- kind of way.

Or something.
