Twitter

I was wondering if anyone on here was on the social networking site Twitter. Well, obviously I assume some of you are.

I was looking for the WH on there, cos I follow Jimmy Eat World and they use Twitter really well I think. They were Twittering their US 'Clarity' tour, basically had photos from soundchecks uploaded 'live' and on the night of the gigs would tweet links to live versions of songs from that night's gig that people had uploaded, also photos and stuff. I thought it was an interesting way to kinda see what bands do all day during a tour. They have like 30,000 followers on Twitter.

WH seem to be using social networking a bit now but mainly Myspace and a bit on Facebook, Ginger seems to use his own Myspace page as much as the WH one for band news though.

I have no real point to this post, I am thinking out loud. So I'll stop now.

I'm on there, but I don't post much - www.twitter.com/Umatron

I'd been thinking about a WH Twitter, and I'm going to suggest it to Kris to try and integrate a feed into the new site.

The new site is based on the Wordpress platform, and it's pretty easy to integrate plugins for all sorts of stuff like that.

Might be worth registering the name and running it manually for the moment anyway.

isn't twitter essentially facebook, but with EVERYTHING except for the status updates removed?

i feel like it's taking the whole social networking thing a bit too far...

I have to say - and please nobody be offended - that I utterly, utterly cannot see the point of Twitter.

I share things I want to share with my friends, but I've never seen the online arena - where loads of people can see things, not just close friends - as ever being the place to lay out my life in detail. It's not like I'm massively secretive, I've met loads of you on here at WH gigs and I'll happily chat about anything and everything. But I don't want to detail every second of my life online.

Twitter to me just seems as though... well, people have gotten past mere fascination with every move that celebrities make and now it's "hey everyone!... I want you to look at every move that *I* make". I have relatively straightforward updates on my Facebook page, but only things like "Damian went to a gig today" and not "Damian has lost all patience with the human race". Some people, I think, give away far too much of themselves online. And although I avoid doing that, I do still sometimes get asked to do it on there too... and it's just not for me.

I just don't get it. Someone enlighten me.

Well personally I use it to network.

I'm a design student and I don't really follow celebs, I follow apparel companies, other designers, t shirt printers. People like that. It keeps me up to date with changes and trends, let's me make contact with other designers and companies, see what they are up to and share what I'm up to.

Since joining twitter I have been followed by a few tshirt companies, promoted my own tees and seen sales rise and been interviewed for a popular tshirt blog. I've only been tweeting for a few weeks.

It creates opportunities that you don't get on bigger sites like facebook. All it is is people sharing what they can do and what happens around them, it's much more direct.

Cheers, that's interesting. I can see what you're saying there and it makes sense. I guess in the same way, I can understand why bands have blogs but I frequently can't understand why individuals do...

I'm almost regretting my previous post because it might have made me sound a little misanthropic, which was definitely not the intention!

Cool, interesting. I use it to network too - in fact, that's what I also use fb for. I'm in public affairs so I use it to follow politicians, charities, companies, think thanks that sort of thing. I really like Twitter because it is fb with all the stuff I don't use removed. I don't care much for seeing people's holiday snaps or getting in touch with all the jerks from school that I left behind.

Twitter seems to combine the personal networking from fb with the 'direct' fan/band contact of myspace. So I'm quite into it really, it's fairly easy to avoid following celebs if you really want to. Of course all the celebs follow me on it though, yeah of course

I think the thing that puts me off Twitter at the moment is the things you read about it like Stephen Fry posting "I am stuck in a lift". All these bite-sized chunks of inane information that I couldn't care less about.

But by the sounds of the use that Nick and Euan get out of it there is clearly a positive side to it, and I think I would join up if the Wildhearts had a feed on there with useful/interesting info.

They have:-

http://www.twitter.com/thewildhearts

Don't expect too much yet though, we only registered it yesterday.

And it's hard to know at this point whether it'll be heavily band member updated, or whether it'll be like the Oasis one which is essentially just a news update thread.

The Stephen Fry lift incident was actually pretty entertaining, cos he kept a running commentary and tweeted pics from inside the lift too.
