References to earlier albums/lyrics on the new album

Postby seventieslord » 11th Sep 07, 22:21

I noticed a couple of references to older Wildhearts songs on the new album. For example:

"headfuckin' waste of ass...." from The Sweetest Song.

"Sitting Duck in your firing range (baby strange)" from Bipolar Baby

"sh1t don't stink" from The Sweetest Song and Destroy all Monsters can be almost traced back to "Truth" if it weren't an almost cliched phrase.

can anyone think of any others?

"and my hearts in the song, and my heads in the sand" (The Hard Way) sounds like it references another Wildies tune but I'm fucked if I can remember which one. Anyone?

I think it's actually quite common for songwriters to reference their songs within their songs (paraphrasing the Dresden Dolls there). One of the most obvious examples I can think of is Veruca Salt breaking into "Seether" in the middle of "Volcano Girls". Interestingly both these tracks were also the "big" singles from the first 2 albums. Clever!

That'll be Mindslide, B side of..... dunno, was it Just in Lust?

"My hearts in the song but my heads in the battle" or something...

It seems to me that the soloing at the end of The Hard Way is likely an intentional revisitation of the soloing at the end of My Baby Is A Headfuck.

the main riff of "the sweetest song" sounds like an extension of the instrumental bit between schizophonic and soul searching, on fishing for luckies.
IF THERE'S A SOUND YOU PLAY THAT DOESN'T FIT TODAY,
WHY NOT JUST PLAY THE BASTARD ANYWAY?!

You know, that just occurred to me for the first time sometime in the last day or two. It's also the intro to Lovebank.

Lemmy has done it quite a few times all on one Motörhead album.

For me, that moment is at the beginning of Inner City Oveture. When the lyrics first come in, I keep wanting to sing the opening lines of Bad Time To Be Having A Bad Time.

Also, one of the background vocal bits in one of the verses of Bi-Polar is "Baby Strange".

And even cleverer is that the Seether section in Volcano Girls mimic's The Beatles' Glass Onion in "the walrus was Paul" verse. I always thought that was cool.

There's also sequels to some songs. Iron Maiden did it with Charlotte The Harlot / 22 Acacia Avenue (I think that was the title) and so did the Lunachicks with Brickface & Stucco / The Return Of Brickface & Stucco

Let's not forget the fabulous double whammy from Metallica: "The Unforgiven" and "The Unforgiven II". It's nothing if not imaginative.
