The Wildhearts and taste in music

Postby seventieslord » 5th Jun 07, 08:23

I'm just on a massive Wildhearts high right now. To quote the old cliche, I'm riding upon a five mile tide of surpise and oblivion!

Call me narrow-minded, but... God!

How can anyone listen to a Wildhearts album and not like it? Or say "meh, it's alright, I guess...."

How can anyone give the Wildhearts a real chance and not be completely in love with them?

How can anyone say they are a fan of good rock and roll, and/or catchy choruses, and/or fine instrumentation, and/or killer riffs, and/or honest music, and/or fine songwriting, and/or fresh, original music, and then NOT be a Wildhearts fan? Or worse yet, not be a Wildhearts fan after hearing them?

It just blows my mind. I don't see how it's possible. The evidence is right there for all to hear. The only excuse you have is to have never heard them, heard of them, or been given a chance to listen to them by some kind enlightened soul. If you have, then you're just a silly twit with no attention span living in a sheltered world of watered-down radio garbage. You may think you know exactly what you're missing, but you don't have a clue.

To each his own? Bullshit! Tell me what Hoobastank, Staind, My Chemical Romance, Default, Train, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Trapt, Good Charlotte, All American Rejects, Evanescence, Puddle Of Mudd, Salive, Deftones, P.O.D., Avril Lavigne, Simple Plan do better than the WIldhearts! No, don't. I'll tell you. Not one stinkin' thing. Not one of those "artists" does one single motherfreaking thing better than the Wildhearts do. And that's just bands that suck! There are even great, well established bands with critical and commercial success who, despite being very good, just can't hold a candle to the Wildhearts on so many levels.

I was on this nice streak of not showing the Wildhearts to anyone for the last 3 years or so. My attitude was "fuck it, I know they kick ass, and no one else deserves to know. They all suck." and I did show the occasional person whom I deemed "cool enough" and I made sure they knew I respected their taste and that was the only reason I was sharing this treasure with them. With the release of the amazing new album (and I haven't moved from my stance that it is the best album of all-time) I have gone back into "save the music through the Wildhearts" mode. Still, it's depressing. There are just so many people out there who should be making this band rich and famous instead of those idiots on MTV, and nothing I can do will ever change that. I feel like I should just hide back in my shell and stop sharing cool music with anybody.

Unless someone wants to inspire me.....

Good post that will probably sum up how a lot of people on here feel. I too am totally in love with all music Ginger related. It actually irates me slightly as anything else I listen to never gets a 10/10 for me as I always compare it with a Ginger / Wildhearts / other project album. Sure a few come close to 'good' and even 'great' and maybe it's my age.... but 1993 came I heard 'Earth Vs' and haven't listened to music the same since!!

This may sound a bit sycophantic (is that a word?) but hey it's what I feel.

I love the likes of Metallica / Motley Crue / Nirvana / Sex Pistols / Skid Row / Alice in Chains / Soundgarden / The Almighty / Green Day / My Chemical Romance.... etc. but none of those hold a match toward The Wildhearts!

I do reckon they will crack it one day, c'mon the media do like a story and one day the 'story' and the right 'song' will do it.

I let someone borrow Earth Vs a while ago... never heard their opinion of it again, unlike other bands music I let them borrow that they were very positive about...so yes, some people must not think its good enough to give it repeat listens or find it instantly alright, not a very inspiring answer I know...

'Earth Vs' will always be my favourite album. By anyone. Ever.

Every single song is a classic and for me it just has everything I want in an album. A glorious 'fuck-you' attitude, perfect melodies, some of the best riffs of all time, intelligent yet totally unpretentious lyrics and original and unusual guitar playing.

Also, it just seems to be able to suit my moods like no other. If I'm fucked off then I can listen to 'Drinking About Life' or 'T.V Tan' or 'Suckerpunch' and feel empathy. If I'm happy and having a few beers with mates then what better sing-a-longs have been written than 'My Baby Is A Headfuck' or 'Loveshit'?

To top it all off, I just have great memories of hearing that album for the first time and thinking "What the fuck is this? Why haven't I heard of this band before? These songs are AMAZING!!"

Great post there Seventieslord. Far as I'm concerned, if someone is a fan of Rock Music and they don't like WH then there's something wrong with em.
Iv'e even heard people say they don't like the band's name. WTF, The Wildhearts is a brilliant cool name and a brilliant cool band of course.

I agree with your points, but it's totally a fans perspective.

I have friends who love rock music (from Queens of the Stone Age through Pearl Jam and Soundagarden), but don't like the Wildhearts, simply because they don't like the pop melodies "intruding" on rock music, or they find the lyrics a little "twee". Those are things I've heard anyway. There are others who don't like Ginger as a singer, and won't listen because of that. I think you'll find that as a massive generalisation, people who are into more "serious" music (grunge, indie and the like) don't like them. I'm the exception, as I love grunge, but also this. Another acid test I reckon is that if someone doesn't "get" Guns n Roses, a massive band who most have heard of, they generally won't "get" the Wildies. Again, massive sweeping generalisation, but one that holds up for the most part.

My girlfriend used to like them (saw them at Donington back in the day), and still enjoys the occasional song I play her (This Time I'm Serious off the singles, she loved), but doesn't really like them due to the "juvenile" lyrics and the "simplistic" songs, and again, she doesn't like Ginger's singing voice. That'll be a barrier to people listening, even if many of us know that's not the case.

intelligent yet totally unpretentious lyrics

Come sucker fucking away the pain, doing the rounds again, bound, held down in a self made Hell that you picked in your own design and you would change your mind if you could turn back time.

Taking the piss out of the men you kissed. Every cock you took, you fucked, you ditched.

And you would open up wide, hung dried and left out to die.

Your corpse ain't gonna be missed

Chorus

I heard a song; I heard the sweetest song that hit me

And it went na, na, na, na

Just a cunt on the hunt for cunt who want that kind of meat.

A fuck in the ass and then they're back on the street.

They're just part of your grand design.

And you would change your mind if you could turn back time.

Shit talking lips around the tool, nothing but a cold pussy passed 'round all of the fools.

You're the last to know that what you sow you reap, and you'll be reaping while weeping on the dick of a creep.

Headfucking waste of ass, all cash and no class you ball breaking no good bitch sitting pretty in pink and thinking your shit don't stink, aside from the twat you ain't all that.

And the boys will dance for a chance to lance your cancerous cunt.

You're the last disease on the block.

That cock, that fresh erection is the next in line for your black infection

There's another forum that I go to a lot, and I'm afraid that I may have hyped them and talked about them too much over there, in combination with the fact that maybe I'm not the most popular guy for some other reasons... but anyway, the result is that I think that my love of the Wildhearts' music has actually hurt their appeal for a large portion of one particular internet community.

Now I'm kind of forced to shut up about it or make it even worse.

People are dicks about music anyway. There's just no getting through to people. You'd swear they're talking about sports teams rather than artists/entertainers.

People can be dicks about music.

As much as love music, and it has changed my life in many ways, I would never make fun of someone because they liked a particular band or judge them as person. Generally, I take as I find.

Will say for the majority of Wildhearts fan I've met, that they're a fucking great bunch.

On the band, I can't understand why not everyone loves them, but then accept that people have different tastes.
