NINETIES REIGN SUPREME AT KERRANG! AWARDS

Well, here's a little shout to everyone in the 90s who said nu metal was just a fad. Well, it was. But a lot of rock and metal bands from the nineties are still around, and apparently they're better than anything that's come along since.

Last night's Kerrang! Awards saw prizes handed out to the likes of Linkin Park, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Machine Head, Alice In Chains, The Prodigy, The Wildhearts and the even older Metallica. In fact, the only new-ish acts to get a mention were In Case Of Fire and The Gaslight Anthem, who picked up the two newcomer awards, and Mastodon, who got Best Video for 'Oblivion', and Bullet For My Valentine, who were named Best British Band.

The ceremony was hosted by Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor and Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian.

Here are the winners in full:

Best British Newcomer: In Case Of Fire
Best International Newcomer: The Gaslight Anthem
Best Single: The Prodigy - Omen
Best Video: Mastodon - Oblivion
Classic Songwriter: Linkin Park
Spirit Of Independence: The Wildhearts
Icon: Alice In Chains
Best Album: Metallica - Death Magnetic
Best Live Band: Slipknot
Inspiration: Machine Head
Hall Of Fame: Limp Bizkit
Best British Band: Bullet For My Valentine
Best International Band: Slipknot

This is quite promising really, but I must give Kerrang! its due, they have always been fairly respctful of older bands who still produced decent albums. During the 90s I remember reading reviews and articles about the likes of Motorhead and The Ramones.

Looking closer at some of the awards though it's clear that they are aimed at bands that have been around for a while eg Icon, Hall of Fame, Inspiration, Classic Songwriter etc

Fantasic to see Ginger and co. get a well deserved award.

My Passion supported Rachel Stamp earlier in the year, plus were on the tiny stage at Download.

Don't listen to 'em.

I take it you mean Jovi?

they were great until 1995 (These Days) - The albums have gone a tad downhill since.

I thought he meant Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden = classic British Metal act

the other two = american crap.

Both right in a way... well, Bon Jovi never did much for me (did like Good Guys Don't Always Wear White though), but I'm not exactly a big fan of classic Metallica either.

Anyway, Spirit of Independence, yay!

"Tune into K! TV tonight (Friday, August 7) at 6PM (Sky channel 368 and Virgin channel 342) to watch Kerrang!'s own Katie Parsons chat to everyone from Metallica to Slipknot, Alice In Chains to Linkin Park and The Prodigy to Mastodon and everyone in-between!"

Im assuming "everyone in-between!" will include The Wildhearts??

I'd have assumed that the Winners show would have included a WH video so I'm not holding my breath.

And on the subject of Bon Jovi, I've said it before, but that was my starting point for rock music and heartfelt choruses (...when I was about 11-14 anyway)

likewise Linkin Park winning classic songwriter
i like hybrid theory but i'd hardly call it classic singwriting.

and whether you like jivi or not you can't argue that they have sold shit loads of albums, sell out stadiums consistently all around the world, have a massive fanbase. therefore they deserve to be in the hall of fame. whereas limp bizkit had three? albums split up, and were middle of the range popular for a couple of years. good band - maybe. hall of fame defintly not.
why do i have to ignore you to get your attention?
