A few random New York gig questions

Postby Jeeze » 30th Aug 07, 14:01

Good day all,

I'll be heading over for both New York gigs from Birmingham, UK with a couple of mates and would be happy to find out if...

... the upgraded boat gig departs from the same jetty/harbour and at the same time as the previous smaller one?

... anyone is planning a gathering of sorts prior to the Friday nite gig at Brooklyn Hook?

... if I'd need to take my passport with me to both gig venues in order to purchase many many beers etc, etc. I hear that it can be sometimes difficult to get alcohol in the States without producing a passport at the bar. Obviously I'd rather not carry my passport around a rock club/boat trip but if that's the case the hey ho :) (p.s. I am 33 years old if this helps answer this question)

Many thanx and hope to see some of you in the Big Apple.

Cheers,

Lee

My understanding is that the two boats leave from different areas, but I'm not sure about the details.

I don't know about a pre-show get together, but I'd be interested in that info as well.

I don't know how it works for foreigners, but I've never heard of anyone being asked for a passport. They usually ask for photo ID, preferably a driver's license, is what they ask for... but I guess maybe if your ID is British, and not something they see every day, they might have a problem. I'm not sure how that would work. I'd recommend calling each place you intend to go to and find out exactly what they will need to see... but I wouldn't be surprised if a driver's license would suffice.

A pre-show get together is a must. Should we all just get to the club 2-3 hours early and look for other people in Wildhearts clothes, or should the organization be more sophisticated than that?

As for the boats, I am pretty positive I heard the big boat leaves from a different location than the small one. I can't remember where though. I should check soon...

My lot of 4 will be in Brooklyn nice and early on Friday. In the coming 7 weeks we'll nail down a rendezvous point. I'll make some calls, first to the Hook and see what they say about IDs for drinks and entrance. Second to Rocks Off, and see if the Big Boat Leaves from the same dock on the west side of Manhattan as the little boat. If you have to bring the Passport, just make a copy of it and leave it at the hotel. Last, I'll ring the British Consulate to se if they are open on Sunday, and to see if you can get the hell out of NYC and back into the UK with just a copy. http://www.britainusa.com/ny/

In stores they have to ask you for ID when buying alcohol if u look under 27. In bars though it doesn't matter how old you look they need all patrons to have IDs on them. Tended to find that in bars they will accept your driving licence even if they have a little difficulty understanding the way British dates of birth are written e.g. 17/2/74 will confuse some bouncers causing them to wonder if there is a 17th month.

When I went on the Rocks Off cruise they checked ID before letting you board, after that you won't get asked for it at the bar.

NYC is quite tourist friendly like that, but Boston was very annoying cos some bars insisted on either State IDs or passports. Grumble, grumble.

Brooklyn

From recollection, the Brooklyn Brewery has a happy hour type thing on Fridays that the wife's been keen to go to for some time, I suspect its easy enough walk from the Hook, so I think we'll plan to go there.

While most of America is fairly gay about demanding ID to let you take a shit even, NYC is slightly more easygoing since:
1) Not everyone drives everywhere there
2) They actually have some exposure to foreign tourists and the outside world

Still, it's possible you'd get shafted by some overenthusiastic dweeb from out of state. I'll buy you beers** if it's a problem. Doubt it'll be a real down and dirty sweatpit gig with crowdsurfing wallet thieving anyway.

** I may need your money to do so...
